From October 13rd (Friday) to October 20th (Friday), we will be screening one film per day from the films nominated for the Toronto Japanese Film Festival, which is held in Canada every June as “Toronto Japanese Film Festival in Hibiya”. All of the screened films will be Japanese films with English subtitles for English speakers who can also easily enjoy these popular Japanese films. In addition, the director of each film will appear on stage before the screening and talk about the behind the screen secrets and their thoughts on the film for about 30 minutes. This is a must-see for the valuable talk that you can only hear here.

Both the Day Screen and Night Screen are free and open to the public, but those who wish to watch the director's talk session and screening in the front seats of the Night Screen can use the "Infinity ZONE (about 30 seats)" by prior reservation.

    Director Masayuki Suo

    Born in 1956, Tokyo. In 1989, debuted as movie director for “Fancy Dance,” starring Masahiro Motoki. The film's unique humor and vivid portrayal of a monk's youth has attracted attention.
    In 1992, he has directed “Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t”, starring Masahiro Motoki about the world of student sumo which has received numerous awards including Best Film for 16th Japan Academy Film Prize.
    “Shal We Dance?” was released in 1996, which has received 20th Japan Academy Film Prize of all 13 categories. This film was released worldwide, then was remade in Hollywood 2005.
    After that he has kept releasing from comedy to social movies, like 2007, “I Just Didn’t Do It”, 2011 “Dancing Chaplin”, 2012 “A Terminal Trust”, 2014 “Lady Maiko”, 2019 “Talking the Pictures”.
    In 2022, he has released a drama version of “Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t” which is about the sumo student 30 years later than the first released movie.

    Tetsu Maeda had started part time job at film making studio’s set carpenters to art assistant, became freelance assistant director, and has took the megaphone in numerous films.

    1998:
    Became a theatre movie director in an omnibus film, “Pocky Hill Love Story/Cute Person”, Episode3 under Director Shinji Somai.

    Born in 1979, Osaka. In 2000, “A Tale of Night” received Special Jury’s Prize at PFF, “DIY Encouragement” (2011) was awarded Short Film Special Mention Prize in 16th Busan International Film Festival.
    An experienced TV commercial planner, Music Video Director, he joined “Your Name” as CG creator in 2016, and debuted as theatre feature-length director with “Gone Wednesday”.
    Became a director again with “Anime Supremacy” (2022) which received numerous prize including Japan Academy Film Prize. “The Silent Service” (release date: 2023/9/29) will be his 3rd feature-length director film.

Don-chan” are his films. In 2023, “Man of 0.5”, a drama series was aired on WOWWOW.

    Born in 1960, Kyoto. Graduated Ryukyu University Agriculture Faculty.
    In 1980, moved to Okinawa at the same year of entering university. He made many movies at Ryukyu University Film Research Group.
    1992 Debuted as pro in “Pineapple Tours” Episode 2, “Haruko and Hideyoshi”
    1999 Directed “Nabbie’s Love”. It was a huge success all around Japan including Okinawa.
    2002 “Hotel Hibiscus” was released all around Japan and was successful.
    Since 2005 Opened “Sakurazaka Theatre”. Became of CEO of 株式会社クランク

    Satori ItoMovie Personality (Movie Critic, Commentary)

    Satori Ito is a film commentator, critic, and screenwriter appearing on TV, radio, and web programs to introduce movies. She has also written film reviews for various publications. She has hosted movie premieres and press conferences for both Hollywood and Japanese films. She was TSUTAYA’s movie curator for 25 years.
    Her regular film commentary segments air on “Hiruobi" (TBS) and “Mezamashi8" (CX) every two weeks. She writes film columns for various publications, including “Pia”, “otocoto”, and “GLOW”. She hosts the " New Satori Ito and her movie friends” actor and director interview program on YouTube. She has also published books on film psychology, including "100 Love Confessions: Charge Your Heart with Movie Lines” in 2023. She has also written other books, including "The Magic Talk Technique to Close the Distance in 2 Minutes: The Secret Technique to Be Loved by People” and the horror novel " Reply”. Also created psychological tests for pamphlets and magazines. She has served as a judge for various film awards, including the Nikkan Sports Film Awards, the Japanese Film Critics Awards, the Japan Film Professional Awards, and the Toei Channel Awards.
